A Day When Oranges are Not to Be Eaten but to Throw Away

Its Chinese Valentines Day, also known as Chap Goh Mei in hokkien language. Segi News Chaser had the chance to visit to one of the the famous landmarks in Ipoh - Guan Yin Tong, to witness the grand celebration of Ipoh citizens for this event.

There are thousands of people in that particular event, every year.

Believers are praying

This is usually a day when single ladies write their name and contact number on the orange (now e-mail address preferrable) and throw it into the water, usually seas, lakes or large drains. Single men are going to grab those oranges and get to know the girls.

Thousands of people

Guan Yin Tong actually has a man-made drain that allows this tradition to carry on eventhough they don't have any lake or river.

Author's View:

Its sacarstic to see that most of the visitors are not single. Yet, I am impressed that this culture doesn't end in our generation.

Anyway, Valentines Day is interesting, doesn't matter if its Chinese or Western style. Maybe you will get a girlfriend of soulmate in such place. Who knows?
