YMCA youth paid a visit to Rumah
Sayangan Orphanage during Chinese New Year. YMCA youth were working as a
volunteer in YMCA. They were students from colleges and universities. One of
the youth was even from Korea. The youth were constantly visiting orphanage
house every month. They were compassionate, caring, willing to share their love
and skills to others and loved to serve the community.
During this Chinese New year, they were having
a potluck lunch here – Rumah Sayangan Orphanage. Potluck was an event that was especially
for a large group where everybody brought various foods to be shared and played
games at the same time.
Although it was usually quite acceptable
to buy foods for potlucks, but the youth tend to cook as their contribution. It
was a great way to share their loves and caring towards the kids. Perhaps they
were proud of and enjoy making. The
youth prepared various foods such as fried rice, fried mihun, nuggets, French
fries, chicken wings, handmade breads and drinks.
The kids were waiting for the youth to start the games. |
Once the YMCA youth reached the Rumah,
the kids look so excited. They loved visitors.
Before everything started, the youth leaders introduced themselves.
Then, the event started by having an ice breaking session to know each and
everyone in the Rumah.
The youth were demonstrating the steps to make ang pow tang lung. |
Then, making ang pow tang lung sessions
started. The group was too big, so they were separated into few groups. For the
younger kids, they were separated to a group that was learning how to make
small decorations using ang pow. For the elder ones, they had to share out the
work and cooperate with one another by making the ang pow tang lung.
Of course, before they knew how to make by
themselves, the youth were here to demonstrate and guide the kid step by step.
After all, everyone was so concentrated on doing their work. Although not every
kid was Chinese, there were some Indians too, and yet, they were learning
together. This was considered as 1 Malaysia too. The kids were learning some
extra skills which they did not learn before.
Esther was feeding the kid, Susan. "Yummy yummy.." |
After about an hour, they finished their
ang pow tang lung. By that time, it was already lunch hour, some of the youth
distributed the foods into plates and some were still playing and communicate
with the kids. In only a few short
hours, the youth already mixed well with the kids in the Rumah. When the youth
wanted to leave, some kids even cried.
When the youth was about to leave, the dean
orphanage, Susan told that she hoped that more volunteers and manpower to join
hands in helping the children through giving tuition, encouraging them, showing
that they were loved and not unwanted, guiding the kids on enhancing their
self-confidence and learning skills but not only playing games and having fun.
